Dr. Samantha Pillay was born with congenital hip dysplasia, which led to a lot of surgery and time in the hospital. She grew up facing many obstacles, including being the only mixed race girl in her school and not being able to walk (or do much else) without help. Despite all of this, she finished school at 16 and went on to become a successful surgeon. In her 50s, she started writing as a way to help people. She wrote a cookbook for people who don't cook and started a picture book series called "Inspirational Careers for Kids" to show young girls that they can be anything they want to be. She never had the opportunity to work with a female surgeon through the whole of her medical school and surgical training after more than 15 years.
